Bizarre BazaarThe death of the American Mall presents an opportunity to replace failed iconic structures with a new architectural pattern focused on meeting urban needs for affordable housing, community space, and local business support. Inspired by the ancient bazaar, an intriguing generative design based upon organic module tiling will be applied to the redevelopment of the 23 acre Lloyd Center mall in Portland, Oregon. This redeveloped “Bizarre Bazaar'' will become a profitable and thriving mixed-use neighborhood combining ground floor commercial tenants with modular housing units, all integrated with nearby recreational, entertainment and community-building venues and activities. A potluck of community-focused uses will serve to encourage the mingling and merging of diverse Portland citizens from different social classes and cultural backgrounds.
